BMPT joins Russian tank division
Russian manufacturer Uralvagonzavod reported on 1 December that BMPT tank support vehicles have been deployed with the 90th Guards Tank Division in the Central Military District.
This is the first delivery of BMPTs to the Russian Armed Forces as part of the execution of the state defence order,’ Uralvagonzavod noted in a statement.
In April 2019, the BMPT entered serial production for the Russian Army. Shephard Defence Insight notes that the 90th Guards Tank Division received ten BMPTs by the end of 2018 for field testing.
Unconfirmed sources indicate that the latest deployment is intended to develop and test field tactics for the BMPT alongside the T-90M and BMP-2M.
Designed to support tank operations in urban environments, the BMPT (nicknamed ‘Terminator’) is armed with two 30mm cannons, two 30mm automatic grenade launchers, four ATGM launchers and a single 7.62mm machine gun. It enables the vehicle to engage a wide spectrum of targets, including IFVs, fortified defensive positions and low-flying, low-speed targets such as helicopters.
The vehicle is powered by a V-92S2 diesel multi-fuel supercharged engine developing 1,000hp, manufactured by UVZ company ChTZ-Uraltrak.
