Raytheon to continue EASR development for ONR
Raytheon will further development of an Enterprise Air Surveillance Radar (EASR) for ship self-defence and situational awareness under a $6 million study and demonstration contract received from the Office of Naval Research (ONR).
The contract will see the company continue work to leverage proven Radar Modular Assembly (RMA) architecture matured on Air and Missile Defense Radar (AMDR) for the development of EASR. The radar is being developed to meet the self-defence, situational awareness, air traffic control and weather monitoring requirements of different ship classes.
According to Raytheon, the Radar Modular Assembly (RMA) affords EASR the scalability to be used on a variety of ship sizes across a diverse set of mission requirements. This should reduce total ownership cost across all the EASR equipped platforms. The RMA has been designed and tested to prove that it operates successfully in the stressing EASR naval marine environments.
Paul Ferraro, vice president of Advanced Technology Programs, Raytheon's Integrated Defense Systems, said: ‘It is clear that the navy is committed to leveraging the latest in technology and innovation to stay ahead of evolving threats. The next generation EASR radar programme is the latest example of Raytheon's partnership with ONR to drive advancement and provide affordable best in class solutions.’
Raytheon will apply its experience as the provider of Dual Band Radar (DBR) and SPS-49 to EASR development. Investment in the ONR Digital Array Radar (DAR) and AMDR programmes will also be leveraged.
