Australia looks towards space with force restructure, investment and training
Australia is looking to improve its presence in space with a focus on communications and creating a dedicated segment of its defence forces committed to the domain.
Chemring Technology Solutions has integrated portable network-in-a-box SmartLink with the TACCOMS software application for a complete tactical command, control, communication and coordination (C4) capability. The milestone was announced by the company on 16 March.
TACCOMS was developed by University Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia. It generates a search grid to optimise tactical resource deployment within land, sea and air scenarios.
With the integration of SmartLink, TACCOMS enables the tactical team leader to maintain complete command and control through a self-contained, secure communications network. The integrated solution's C4 capability improves team collaboration and situational awareness.
At present, tactical military radios constrain users to basic voice and low data rate communications. With SmartLink, teams on the ground and in command centres can gain access to high-end cellular network features, including real-time voice, image and video sharing.
SmartLink can be deployed within three minutes when the local commercial cellular infrastructure fails, delivering a wide area cellular network. It has a small form factor, long range and low power consumption, and has been trialled successfully by organisations across the world. It can be used for supporting military, national border security, humanitarian and public safety operations where the commercial mobile network coverage may be non-existent or unreliable.

The Portuguese company’s naval communications system is in service across more than a dozen countries. It has turned to its home nation for support in developing a new vehicle based C2 system.
The Vision4ce Deep Embedded Feature Tracking (DEFT) technology software is designed to process video and images by blending traditional computer vision with artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms to present actionable information from complex environments.
Persistent Systems has been cleared by National Security Agency (NSA) to transmit sensitive data on commercial networks. The devices are added to the NSA’s Commercial Solutions for Classified (CSfC) component list which also includes other companies’ products providing the same security.
The release of the UK’s Strategic Defence Review (SDR) has been long promised as mid-year. It is possible it could be as early as 2 June although the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) continues to play its cards close to its chest.
