US DoD reveals details of European theatre reshuffle
The US DoD will reposition nearly 12,000 military personnel serving in Germany to alternative NATO countries and in preparation for rotational deployments to the Black Sea region.
Nearly 5,600 US military personnel will reposition within other NATO countries, with more than 6,400 returned to the US to address readiness and prepare for rotational deployments, according to a 29 July DoD release.
The move follows an early-June decision by the US administration to reduce its force levels in Germany.
In a 29 July statement NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that the DoD announcement ‘underlines the continued commitment by the United States to NATO’ and that the US had ‘consulted closely’ with NATO allies.
