Russia eyes its chances as time runs out on Iranian arms embargo

The UN Security Council (UNSC) on 14 August rejected a US call to extend the arms embargo on Iran that was imposed as part of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) adopted in 2015.

From 18 October 2020, therefore, UNSC approval will no longer be required for arms exports to Iran.

An attempt by the US to extend the embargo was only backed by the Dominican Republic. Russia and China voted against and the remaining 11 members of the UNSC abstained.
