Taipei eyes new SAR helicopters after typhoon

Taiwan has flagged plans to buy 15 new search and rescue helicopters in the aftermath of typhoon Morakot which has killed at least 128 people and caused property damage worth US$1.5 billion.

But the deal will come at the expense of existing plans to acquire 60 Sikorsky S-70 Black Hawk helicopters for the Taiwanese military.

Taiwanese president Ma Ying-jeou says the new SAR aircraft will be funded by reducing the proposed Black Hawk order down to 45 aircraft to allow redirection of $300 million to the search and rescue aircraft project.
