Sikorsky and the Brazilian Instituto Tecnologico de Aeronautica (ITA) have launched new initiative in Brazil to strengthen the aerospace engineering base in the country and accelerate rotorcraft technology development as the country's requirements in the sector grow.

The Collaboration for Rotorcraft Innovation will aim to increase undergraduate exposure to rotorcraft principles as part of aerospace engineering education in Brazil. ITA will use Sikorsky funds to include rotorcraft-related curriculum to its aerospace engineering education programme. It will also add new staff to teach the material and provide sponsored scholarships for rotorcraft-related student research.

A rotorcraft innovation lab sponsored by Sikorsky will likely be completed by the end of 2015. It will include a fixed-base flight simulator and other equipment to facilitate this teaching and research. The company will also provide on-campus visiting mentors to assist with classes and associated research.

Antonio Pugas, region executive for Latin America, Sikorsky, said: 'The demand for in-country rotary wing assets continues to grow with the delivery of new, advanced helicopter systems to Brazil's armed forces. Sikorsky will collaborate with the ITA to provide them with a strong background in rotorcraft design.'
