The modernised Ka-27M helicopters recently delivered to the Russian Navy are upping the capabilities of the shipborne aviation component of the navy's anti-submarine forces.

The upgraded Ka-27M helicopters are equipped to search for, detect, track and defeat submarines. The aircraft can take-off and land on ship decks in up to sea state five, providing anti-submarine defences at medium-long ranges.

The helicopters, which can also support anti-surface warfare operations, can also carry out search and rescue and transport tasks.

Naval Aviation received ten modernised Ka-27M helicopters in late 2017. According to the state armaments programme, ten modernised Ka-27M helicopters are set to be delivered per year.
