Rotorcraft heavyweights selected for JMR TD phase

In a widely anticipated move, the US Army has chosen Bell Helicopter and Sikorsky-Boeing to build demonstrators for the Joint Multi-Role - Technology Demonstrator (JMR-TD) programme.

The two teams will now manufacture and prepare their aircraft for a first flight in 2017, in what will be a protracted battle to ultimately secure a production contract to replace the Black Hawk and Apache fleets from the mid-2030s onwards.

As well as having wide-ranging ramifications for the rotorcraft industrial base in the US, the outcome of the Future Vertical Lift (FVL) programme will help shape how the army operates in the future,
