Iraq requests armed Bell 407GX helicopters

The US State Department has made a determination approving a potential foreign military sale of armed Bell 407GX helicopters to Iraq, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency announced on 4 October.

In a package worth $82.5 million, Iraq has requested five armed Bell 407GX helicopters configured with five M240 7.62mm machine guns, five RF-7850A secure communications radios, five AN/AAR-60 MILDS automatic plume detectors, five AN/ALE-47 airborne countermeasure dispensing systems and five M3P .50 calibre machine guns. 

Also included are five M260 Rocket Launchers (APKWS configuration), five MX-15Di EO/IR sensors, five GAU-19 .50 calibre machine guns, five Pathfinder mission management systems, five ARES weapon management systems and five mission configurable armament systems.

The package also includes night vision compatible lighting systems, aircraft intercommunications systems, cockpit and seat armour kits and bifurcated exhaust infrared suppressor systems, maintenance and operator training for radio systems and other related elements of logistics and programme support.

If the sale goes ahead, Bell, L3 WESCAM, Dillon, Tekfusion Global, Harris and Fulcrum Concepts will be the principal contractors.
