Fennec helicopter crews in Denmark have been practicing flight operations in the snow.

The crews from 724 Squadron are preparing used the snow to practice white-out landings, to prepare themselves for brown-out conditions for if and when they deploy to Afghanistan.

The Danish Air Force said: "When a helicopter lands in the desert sand swirls up, so the pilots vision is confined to a few meters. This discipline is called "brown-out" because the brown cloud is the only thing you can see from inside the helicopter.

"It is very demanding for both the pilot and observer, then you have to be aware that the helicopter does not move above the ground without you observing it."

Usually, Danish pilots train for these conditions in the Norwegian mountains north of the Arctic Circle. But recent days have snow and freezing weather cause 40 centimeters of snow to fall at 724 Squadron's homebase at Karup, allowing the crews to train locally.
