The United States Coast Guard has flown the latest iteration of its H-65 Dolphin helicopter.

The prototype, MH-65D, aircraft 6543, first flew on March 17 and began in-flight trials on March 23 at the Coast Guard Aviation Logistics Center (ALC) in Elizabeth City, North Carolina.

The aircraft is a further update of the MH-65C and features a new flight navigation system, common to other Department of Defence helicopter fleets replacing the current compass, directional, yaw rate gyro systems, and GPS system.

The Coast Guard currently operates around 100 H-65 Dauphins, of these, 33 have been upgraded to the 'multi-mission' MH-65
