The US Navy has awarded a contract to Calspan Aerospace to provide a next-generation Variable Stability System (VSS) for a US Naval Test Pilot School (USNTPS) UH-60L Blackhawk helicopter, the company announced on 29 September.
The company will fabricate, design and install a fly-by-wire VSS computer system, sensor suite, pilot and aircraft interfaces, safety trip and data recording systems on the UH-60L Blackhawk Helicopter under the contract. The project is set to be performed over the next six months.
The USNTPS trains flight test officers, engineering test pilots, and flight test engineers to conduct test and evaluation at the Aircraft Division of the Naval Air Warfare Center.
With the help of the modified helicopter, the students will be exposed to various handling quality characteristics. The helicopter will become the third-generation variable stability UH-60 to be used in the school’s training programmes.
Lou Knotts, CEO and Test Pilot, Calspan, said: ‘We are excited to begin this next project with USNTPS, who Calspan has had a long-standing relationship with, and to help create the best learning environment for future Test Pilot School graduates.’
