AgustaWestland has successfully completed autorotation trials for its AW609 tiltrotor programme at the Arlington facility in Texas, it has been announced.

The tests were carried out under the observation of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and covered the full wind-milling and autorotation envelopes.

Trials were completed between the end of March and early April and entailed 10 dedicated flight hours which saw more than 70 power-off conversions from aeroplane-to-helicopter modes.

According to AgustaWestland, the performance of the aircraft surpassed expected characteristics witnessed during preparation in engineering simulation stages of the programme.

The autorotation trials follow the completion of the AW609
