AUSA 2016: V-247 to provide pivotal vigilance

Bell Helicopter has unveiled its unmanned VTOL concept, the V-247 Vigilant tiltrotor, which it hopes will meet the US Marine Corps’ (USCM) requirement for a large Group 5 UAS.

While the V-247 is currently aimed towards the USMC, following requirements outlined in the 2016 Marine Corps Aviation Plan, the new tiltrotor could also meet a potential US Army requirement for a runway-independent UAS system planned for the mid-2020s.

The Bell V-247 is intended to operate without the need for a runway, both in maritime environments on-board ships and on land. The company said it could be ready to produce
