Germany to send WS-61 Westland Sea King helicopters to Ukraine
Germany has committed to sending Ukraine six of its 21 retiring WS-61 Westland Sea King multirole, amphibious helicopters.
Airbus Defence and Space and Huneed Technologies signed a cooperation agreement to produce the components of the former’s Missile Launch Detection System (MILDS) missile warning system.
The agreement was announced by Airbus Defence and Space on 18 March.
Under the agreement, Airbus Defence and Space and Huneed Technologies will produce the core electronics components of the MILDS system to be provided to South Korea’s new utility helicopter, Surion.
Airbus Defence and Space has been awarded several contracts since 2007 to develop and manufacture the missile warning system for the Surion based on its MILDS system. Part of the production contract involved setting up partnerships with local industries.
MILDS is a passive imaging sensor that can detect the UV radiation signature of approaching missiles. Over 8,000 of these sensors have been sold so far, and MILDS is the standard missile approach warner outside the US. It is in operation in various rotary wing and wide-body aircraft, including Tiger, NH90, CH-53, CH-47 and MI-17 helicopters and C-130 transport aircraft.
