Germany to send WS-61 Westland Sea King helicopters to Ukraine
Germany has committed to sending Ukraine six of its 21 retiring WS-61 Westland Sea King multirole, amphibious helicopters.
Airbus Helicopters has delivered the first two H145M military multi-role helicopters to the German armed forces, the company announced on 8 December.
The helicopters will be deployed by the Kommando Spezialkräfte (KSK) army special forces in Laupheim.
The German H145M (LUH SOF) has been fitted with a fast roping system, hoists, cargo hooks, ballistic protection, a pintle-mounted door gun and an electronic countermeasures system. The helicopter is equipped for day and night missions with a helmet mounted sight and display, and carries a self-sealing supply tank.
The German military is the launch customer for the helicopter and has ordered 15 units of H145M. The helicopter has a maximum take-off weight of 3.7 tons and can be used for a range of military operations, including reconnaissance, utility, search and rescue, armed scout, and medical evacuation.
Wolfgang Schoder, CEO, Airbus Helicopters Germany, said: ‘With its cutting-edge technologies, outstanding performance and true multi-role capabilities, the H145M answers to the challenging demands of our military customers in today's missions. We are very proud to hand over these aircraft on time and on budget. From contact signature to first delivery in just two years, this project is a benchmark of efficient cooperation between Bundeswehr, authorities and industry.’
Airbus Helicopters will support the German H145M fleet under a seven year agreement signed in June.
