Australia forced to extend life of Black Hawk

Despite the ongoing introduction of 47 NHIndustries MRH90 Taipan helicopters into Australian service, persistent programme delays will force the Black Hawk fleet to remain in service until at least 2019.

Final operational capability for the MRH90s for the army and the navy was supposed to have occurred in 2014 but is not now expected until July 2019.

This forced Australia’s chief of army at the end of June to formally extend the training role of Sikorsky S-70A-9 Black Hawk helicopters for a two-year period. Australia’s 35-strong S-70A-9 fleet, acquired from 1987-91, was originally to have been withdrawn between 2011
