The Heron 1 UAS is set to replace the Israeli Air Force’s (IAF) manned Sea Scan maritime patrol aircraft, Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) announced on 15 May.

The IAF has ordered additional maritime versions of the Heron 1 equipped with a lightweight ELTA airborne maritime surveillance radar and the MOSP electro-optical payload from the TAMAM division of IAI.

The configuration gives the Heron 1 improved maritime patrol and intelligence gathering missions capabilities.

According to IAI, the maritime Herons will provide comprehensive protection of naval borders and strategic infrastructures to meet operational needs.

Shaul Shahar, IAI executive vice president, said: ‘The Heron 1 has proved its capability to perform long-range, long-endurance maritime patrol missions. Thanks to its unique features and upgraded payloads, the Heron 1 provides a better solution for the maritime patrol mission than currently exists at the IAF.’
