Coinciding with the Avalon Air Show, the Australian Army released an industry engagement paper covering Project Land 129 Phase 3, the planned replacement of the Textron RQ-7 Shadow 200 v1 tactical UAV system currently in service with the Brisbane-based 20th Surveillance and Target Acquisition Regiment.

The paper stated that the project ‘will grow the capability to provide a third subunit (battery) and provide an enduring capability effect that enables 24/7 intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance.’ The Shadow is due for retirement in around 2023.

The government is expected to grant project approval in mid-2019, which would kick off a tender process
