AUVSI 2016: Underwater UAVs to become a reality

The future of unmanned aircraft could see UAVs and unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) combined into one system to provide extra mission capability for the US Navy, among other potential customers.

Prof Francisco Javier Diez of Rutgers University has developed an unmanned system, dubbed the Naviator, which can be both airborne and work under the surface.

To date Diez has conducted one test of the vehicle and is planning on carrying out a full demonstration to NATO in June of this year for search and rescue applications.
