Lockheed Martin is building and equipping a new shared training facility for the Franco-German Super Hercules squadron.

The training centre will be built in France at Évreux-Fauville Air Base. It will provide training for the KC-130J tanker aircraft as well as the C-130J-30 airlifter.

Lockheed Martin will provide training devices (built under contract by CAE), the learning management system, courseware and options for five years of in-country training services under the terms of a new direct commercial sale contract.

Ground will be broken on the training centre in 2021 and training will begin in 2024.

The binational Franco-German squadron comprises a total of 10 aircraft. In 2018, Germany announced the acquisition of three C-130J-30s and three KC-130Js to be operated in partnership with France, in a package worth $959 million overall.

Delivery of these aircraft is expected to begin in 2021, according to Shephard Defence Insight.

For its part, France bought four Super Hercules aircraft (a pair apiece of C-130-J-30s and KC-130Js) via the FMS programme in February 2016 for $520 million. The French C-130Js are operated in conjunction with its existing C-130H fleet.
