Sri Lankan Navy receives ships from regional rivals

The strategic importance of Sri Lanka in South Asia was underlined this week when the Sri Lankan Navy (SLN) took delivery of vessels from the two regional superpowers vying for supremacy in the Asia Pacific.

The SLN has been looking to bolster its capabilities to patrol the country’s EEZ, and further afield, and the new ships form part of that plan.

A frigate, formerly of the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN), was handed over to the SLN at a ceremony at the Shanghai Zhonghua shipyard on 5 June.
