Preparation for the mid-life upgrade of the Royal Swedish Navy’s two Gotland-class submarines by Saab is expected to be completed in the 2014-15 timeframe.

Saab, which is in the process of taking over the Kockums shipbuilding business owned by German company Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS), has orders from the Swedish FMV worth $70 million to complete the systems design and detailed construction plans.

A spokesperson from Saab told Shephard there are no further orders at this stage but a letter of intent signed between the company and the FMV outlines a commitment to a continued sub-surface capability out to 2024
