Raytheon awarded Canadian CIWS contract
Raytheon Canada has been awarded a $704 million contract to upgrade and support 21 Phalanx Close-In Weapons Systems (CIWS) in service with the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN), the Canadian Department of National Defence announced on 26 January.
The Phalanx CIWS defends against maritime threats such as missiles, small ships, and aircraft. The rapid-fire, radar-guided gun systems are currently in use on the navy’s Halifax-class frigates, and will also be installed on the Protecteur-class joint support ships following their construction.
Raytheon's contract will run until late 2037. The contract includes an initial ten year service period with options of five, three and two additional years.
Harjit Sajjan, Minister of National Defence, Canada, said: ‘Today’s announcement is aligned with the goals we set out in Strong, Secure, Engaged – we are making strategic investments in the RCN that will help protect our sailors as they conduct the full spectrum of operations in a modern security environment.’
