Raytheon receives SM-6 order
Raytheon has been awarded $270 million to exercise fiscal 2016 options by the US Navy for Standard Missile-6 (SM-6) production and spares requirements, it announced on 8 March.
The company will conduct the final assembly of the missile at its production facility at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama.
In recent tests, SM-6 has demonstrated expanded capability beyond its original mission in three areas - anti-surface warfare, sea-based terminal and anti-air warfare.
Mike Campisi, senior program director, Standard Missile-6, Raytheon, said: ‘US Navy commanders want both capability and flexibility to meet a wide variety of missions, and that's exactly what SM-6 offers. Its use is transforming defence.’
The SM-6 provides tri-mission capability for long-range sea-based terminal defence and fleet air defence. It incorporates the guidance control and signal processing capabilities of Raytheon's Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile, using both semi-active and active guidance modes and advanced fuzing techniques.
