Turkey launches indigenously designed frigate

Three more multi-role frigates will follow TCG Istanbul by 2027.

TCG Istanbul was launched on 23 January 2021 at the Istanbul Naval Shipyard, slightly more than four years after construction began.

As the first indigenously designed and built frigate for the Turkish Navy and the lead vessel in the four-ship Istif class, Istanbul will be joined by İzmir, İzmit, and İçel by 2027.

The Istif-class multi-role frigates will replace the four Yavuz (MEKO 200) class vessels, which are approaching the end of their service life.

The design of the new frigate is based on the Ada-class corvette.
