LHA 9 preparations continue with latest long-lead materials contract
Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) has obtained a $80.24 million contract by the USN to procure more long lead time materials (LLTM) for the fourth America-class Landing Helicopter Assault ship (LHA 9).
This is the fourth LLTM incremental contract to be awarded to HII, the US DoD announced on 26 February.
HII announced in May 2020 that it had received a $187.46 million advance procurement contract from the USN to provide the long-lead-time material and advance procurement activities for LHA 9.
This vessel is also the second Flight 1 variant in the America class, meaning that it will be built with a well deck.
Work will be performed in six US locations for completion by February 2024.
The America class will ultimately comprise up to 11 vessels.
Shephard Defence Insight expects construction of LHA 9 to start in September 2022 and delivery expected in September 2028.
