Despite restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic, keel laying ceremony for German Navy corvette goes ahead as K130 programme continues apace.

The keel of the eighth K130 (Braunschweig class) corvette for the German Navy was laid on 6 October at the Wolgast Peene shipyard.

In total, the German Navy will receive ten Braunschweig-class corvettes, after a second batch of five was ordered in September 2017. The programme is scheduled for completion by 2025.

The second batch of five vessels are being built by the K130 consortium, consisting of Lürssen Werft, thyssenkrupp Marine Systems and German Naval Yards Kiel. Two corvettes will be manufactured and equipped at the Lürssen shipyard in Bremen and three in Kiel.

The five aft sections are manufactured at Lürssen’s Wolgast Peene shipyard, while the joining of the fore and aft sections is carried out by Lürssen subsidiary Blohm + Voss.

According to Defence Insight, the unit cost is approximately $500 million, with the 89m-long and 1,800t Braunschweig-class corvettes capable of reaching 26kt. The vessels are tailored for crisis reaction and HADR operations, as well as maritime security and patrol duties.
