Romania and USMC to receive HIMARS launchers

2nd September 2020 - 16:30 GMT | by The Shephard News Team

Lockheed Martin Missile Fire Controls, Grand Prairie, Texas, was awarded an $183.18 million contract modification by US Army Contracting Command, to provide M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System  launchers for the USMC and FMS customer Romania.

Work will be performed in Camden, Arizona; and Grand Prairie, Texas, with an estimated completion date of 20 December 2023.

In mid-August 2017, the US State Department approved the sale of 54 HIMARS systems to Romania for $1.25 billion. Another order followed in 2019.

Shephard Defence Insight notes that HIMARS is designed to provide the US and allied armies with a lighter, more mobile alternative to the M270 MLRS.

Comprising a turntable launcher mounted on a 6x6 Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles cross-country truck chassis, HIMARS can accommodate a 'six pack' of Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System rockets with a maximum range of approximately 70km, or one MGM-140 Army Tactical Missile System that can strike targets up to 300km away.
