JGSDF parades newest equipment
The Japan Ground Self-Defence Force (JGSDF) showed off some of its newest equipment at a parade in Tokyo on 23 October, including the Type 11 short-range surface-to-air missile (11SAM), Type 12 surface-to-ship missile (12SSM), Bushmaster 4x4 protected mobility vehicle and Type 16 Manoeuvre Combat Vehicle (16MCV).
The 11SAM, a new divisional-level SAM, entered service in 2011. Owing to increased violations of Japanese airspace by Chinese aircraft and UAVs over the East China Sea, the 11SAM was first deployed by the 15th Brigade in Okinawa.
The 11SAM can be used not only against aircraft, but also supersonic air-to-surface missiles and cruise
