India picks Bharat to provide T-90 mine ploughs
The Indian MoD has ordered 1,512 mine ploughs from state-owned Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) for installation on T-90 tanks.
Under a INR5.57 billion (USD74.6 million) contract, announced on 20 July, the ploughs will be fitted to Indian Armoured Corps MBTs by 2027.
To meet the stipulations of the 'Make In India' initiative, the mine ploughs will have at least 50% domestically produced content.
These ploughs ‘will facilitate individual mobility’ for tanks negotiating minefields, extending the reach of armoured formations ‘deep into enemy territory’, according to the official government Press Information Bureau.
Shephard Defence Insight notes that India is the largest export customer for the T-90, with 2,121 variants on order. The Indian Army operates the T-90S Bhishma MBT (pictured) and it has also ordered the latest export variant, the T-90MS.
