DSA 2016: Skyshield to monitor China

Amidst growing concern in Jakarta about Chinese encroachment in the South China Sea, Indonesia will shift some Oerlikon Skyshield air defence systems to the Natuna Islands.

The Skyshield units will be stationed on Pulau Natuna Besar, the largest island of the archipelago, where Ranai Air Base of the Indonesian Air Force (TNI-AU) is located.

In January 2013, Rheinmetall announced it would supply Skyshield to an ‘unnamed Asian customer’, with first delivery scheduled to take place in 2014. This customer is now known to be Indonesia.
