The US-led coalition fighting Daesh in Iraq and Syria launched one of its biggest strikes on 8 December aided by a secretive ‘new capability’ known as the Target Fusion Cell (TFC).

Details of the air strike and the TFC were released by the US Air Force on 17 December, following a successful airstrike against Daesh near Palmyra, Syria, that involved 20 aircraft and the destruction 168 oil tankers.

A core mission area, according to the US Air Force, for the recently established cell is to strike Daesh oil tankers in Syria and cut off key revenue streams for the organisation.
