France awards contract for next-generation binoculars
Sagem has been awarded a contract by the French defence procurement agency (Direction Générale de l'Armement or DGA) for 1,175 of its JIM LR 2 binoculars.
On 18 January the DGA announced the contract for the new-generation, long-range multifunction infrared binoculars, as part of the JIR-TTA-NG (Jumelle Infrarouge Toutes Armes de Nouvelle Génération) programme, which aims to acquire the systems for deployment by all of the French armed forces.
Sagem describes the JIM LR 2 (Jumelle Infrarouge Multifonction - Long Range) as being a ‘portable all-in-one unit, combining day/night (thermal) vision, range-finding, laser pointer, compass, GPS and data transmission’.
The JIM LR 2 binoculars, designed for threat detection, precision target designation, and intelligence gathering for front line and command units, will be interoperable with systems used in the FELIN future infantry soldier system.
The FELIN is a complete, modular and unified system for infantry soldiers, and close to 31,500 units are to be produced by 2013.
Five hundred remote-control tactical terminals, offering enhanced ergonomics and compact design, are also included in the contract. Training for users and maintenance staff will also be provided by Sagem.
The JIM LR 2 directly derives from the original JIM LR (Long Range) unit and, according to Sagem, on top of the same design and hardware, offers increased detection and identification range; increased target designation range; image fusion between the visible and infrared channels; and recording of videos and images via a USB port.
The JIM LR is already deployed by several NATO countries. More than 2,000 of the 4,500 JIM LR units are in service or on order with French armed and security services.
