Saab and DRB-HICOM Berhad subsidiary Defence Technologies have signed an industrial co-operation agreement, as announced by Saab on 13 January. The agreement adds the Gripen system to their joint planning and is part of Saab's efforts to strengthen industrial ties with the nation as it seeks new fast jet capabilities.

The agreement outlines planned industrial cooperation which will explore areas of technology transfer and bring further expertise to Malaysia. It covers areas including Gripen-related maintenance and support activities, design and manufacturing of advanced composite systems and associated technology transfer.

Besides supporting the Malaysian government's defence programmes with solutions that enhance the nation’s operational capabilities, the new agreement will also create business opportunities for both parties.

Thomas Lindén, Head of Saab Malaysia, said: 'For Saab, the agreement with Deftech is an important step in order to do further business in Malaysia and surrounding countries.'
