Upgraded RAF Pumas begin Afghan deployment

The Royal Air Force’s upgraded Puma HC Mk2 medium helicopter has achieved initial operating capability (IOC), paving the way for three to be deployed to Afghanistan this month.

MoD officials told Shephard the IOC for the upgraded fleet was declared on 23 February, around a month earlier than originally planned.

Three of the new Puma 2 aircraft – modernised as part of a £260 million life extension programme – will replace several Boeing Chinook HC4 helicopters that are currently stationed in Kabul supporting the UK’s contribution to the NATO Resolute Support Mission.
