Sener has delivered the second Agusta Bell helicopter 212 (AB212) to the Spanish Ministry of Defense’s Directorate General of Armament and Material, it announced on 29 March.
The delivery is a part of a modernisation project that is being carried out by Sener in a temporary joint venture with Inaer. The project includes increasing the operational lives of the Spanish navy’s seven aircraft by at least 15 years.
The extension will involve incorporation of equipment and avionics advancements, and new capacities like protection and self-defence systems, a night vision system and radar. Protection and self-defence systems include armoured and anti-crash seats for the crew; a ballistic protection system in the flight and passenger cabin; a missile approach warning system; modifications to the auxiliary fuel tanks; cargo crane; tactical mission controller; TAWS; GPS navigation system; automatic identification system; EO/IR radar; and EFIS.
The modernisation will enable the AB212 helicopters to operate without restrictions in controlled civilian and military airspace, in accordance with new regulations. The self-protection and defence systems will also enable them to be deployed in low-medium threat multinational missions.
