Rheinmetall is currently upgrading the German armed forces' NH90 Cockpit Trainer with updated simulation technology, the company announced on 27 April.

The company won the contract in March to upgrade the trainer to IOC+ configuration and add training software modules from its Asterion product line.

The trainer is used for initial and advanced training of aviation technical personnel in NH90 helicopter operations at the German Air Force technical training centre.

According to the company, the upgraded simulator enables the training of aircraft technicians in all systems of the NH90 helicopter without using the original weapons system. The Asterion modular simulation by Rheinmetall reproduces the behaviour of air, sea and land weapon systems, the company said.

With this order, all NH90 Cockpit Trainers have now been upgraded to IOC+ configuration status, and are programmed with additional Asterion training software modules.

Asterion can be used on various training devices according to Rheinmetall, including tablet PCs and full cockpit replicas, and it can be customised to the training needs of customers. It can also be combined with a computer-based training solution.
