Poland’s plans for a future diversified helicopter fleet

On 21 April Polish President Bronisław Komorowski brought a long process and months of speculation about the country’s procurement plans to an end by announcing that the Airbus Helicopter EC725/H225M Caracal was the front-runner in the country’s utility helicopter tender. 

Poland had plans to acquire 70 utility-class helicopters, but should the plans for the Caracal acquisition be followed through on there would be a maximum of only 50 procured.

The reality of Poland’s helicopter procurement is that the country has to have a diversified fleet in order to address practical military requirements, as well as real-world political realities. Ultimately, the front-line
