Germany to send WS-61 Westland Sea King helicopters to Ukraine
Germany has committed to sending Ukraine six of its 21 retiring WS-61 Westland Sea King multirole, amphibious helicopters.
Although there are numerous NH90 sub-variants, more than there are customer nations, there are currently two main variants, the Tactical Transport Helicopter (TTH) and NATO Frigate Helicopter (NFH) (pictured). A hybrid version is now entering service, the Maritime Tactical Transport (MTT) version.
Essentially a fusion of the two versions without the search radar or ASW equipment of the NFH, but with its strengthened undercarriage and folding tail and rotors.
Missions envisaged for the MTT include: troop transport; disaster relief; parachuting; medevac; maritime counter-terrorism; and anti-piracy, from both ships and shore bases.
