Netherlands beefs up its Apaches

The Royal Netherlands Air Force (RNLAF) has developed a new set of modifications and operational techniques to turn its AH-64D Apaches into an ISTAR platform - and the experiment has proved so successful the force is considering extending the capability across its rotary wing fleet. 

The new capability resulted from a surprise requirement that emerged as part of the Dutch contribution to MINUSMA (United Nations Integrated Stabilisation Mission in Mali) in 2014, according to RNLAF staff officer for ISR and space, Maj Joel Postma.
