Long night for RAF Search and Rescue after Cumbria floods

RAF Search and Rescue Sea Kings crews faced one of their busiest days of the year following devastating rainfall in Cumbria yesterday.

Forecasters said heavy rain in excess of 250mm (9.8 inches) of rain fell in some parts of the county saturated ground and swelled rivers causing flooding in towns. Cockermouth, Keswick and Kendal were the worst effected.

Five Sea Kings are involved in the rescue efforts, lifting people from their roofs and out of bedroom windows. Reports say 50 people were airlifted from their homes in Cockermouth, with one aircraft reportedly lifting 27.
