Leonardo has integrated and 'powered on' the first Genesys Aerosystems avionic system on the TH-119 single engine helicopter, the company announced on 14 September.

The all new avionics and cockpit allows instrument flight rules operations. The TH-119 is expected to perform its maiden flight in autumn and to achieve FAA certification in the first quarter of 2019.

The TH-119 is a variant of the AW119 specifically designed for military training customers, primarily to meet US Navy requirements. The helicopter features the Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6-B engine and the Genesys Aerosystems cockpit gives the flexibility to instruct from either seat.

The training helicopter can carry out basic visual flight rules training flights, including hovering and full auto-rotations; as well as advanced training flights, including night vision goggle, instruments, tactics, hoist, cargo hook and shipboard landings.

The helicopter’s cabin features an additional 180° adjustable trainer observation seat at the base of the instrument panel giving the occupant a full view of the cockpit; full night vision device compatible cockpit and cabin with high-visibility cockpit doors and a low-profile instrument panel to ensure maximum visibility from the cockpit; and a five-fuel cell option that provides more than five hours of flight time with pressure refuelling port allowing for less downtime to refuel as well as ‘hot’ refuelling while the engine is still running.
