The US State Department has made a determination approving a possible foreign military sale of UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters and related equipment to Latvia, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency announced on 3 August.

In a package worth $200 million, Latvia has requested four UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters in standard USG configuration with designated unique equipment and government furnished equipment, ten T700-GE-701D engines and ten embedded global positioning systems/inertial navigation systems.

The package also includes one aviation mission planning system, five Talon forward looking infrared radars, ten AN/ARC-201D/E, ten AN/ARC-231 radios, five AN/APX-123A identification friend or foe transponders, five AN/ARC-220 radios, 20 AN/AVS-6 helmet mounted night vision devices and other related elements of logistics and programme support.

The helicopters will enhance Latvia's ability to perform troop lift, border security, anti-terrorist, medical evacuation, SAR, re-supply/external lift and combat support missions in all weather.

If the sale goes ahead, Sikorsky Aircraft and General Electric Aviation will be the prime contractors.
