OCCAR-EA has awarded two contracts to a consortium consisting of Airbus Helicopters, Thales and MBDA for de-risk work for the planned mid-life upgrade of current Tiger helicopters.
The contract has been awarded on behalf of the French Defence Procurement Agency, Germany's Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support and the Spanish Directorate-General for Armament and Material.
The launch of this new phase is the conclusion of a three-year work period between France, Germany and Spain, Airbus Helicopters and OCCAR, to investigate possible technologies and architectures that will be able to meet future operational requirements.
At the end of these de-risking studies, the three countries will have a technical baseline to decide on the launch of the development of a mid-life upgrade programme for its Tiger helicopters to an Mk III configuration. Mk III will integrate advanced technologies such as a new avionics suite and will provide an improved weapon system, allowing the helicopter to maintain superiority on the battlefield for the next decades.
