The Royal Australian Navy has accepted the first MH-60R Seahawk Tactical Operational Flight Trainers (TOFT) into service it was announced early this month.

The navy also accepted an MH-60R Avionics Maintenance/Weapons Load Trainer (AM/WLT). Both simulators are located at HMAS Albatross. The MH-60R TOFT, which is the first of two trainers ordered, received Level D certification from the Australian Defence Force Airworthiness Authority as well.

Australia is acquiring 24 MH-60R Seahawk helicopters through a US foreign military sale programme. CAE was awarded contracts in 2012 and 2013 to design and manufacture two MH-60R TOFTs and an MH-60R AM/WLT for the navy.

The MH-60R TOFTs feature a full-motion operational flight trainer as well as a weapons tactics trainer for airborne tactics officers and rear-crew sensor operators. CAE has included its True electric motion system, motion seats, 220-degree by 60-degree Barco visual display, and Medallion-6000 image generator in the TOFTs.

The MH-60R simulators for the navy also have common database architecture so that the navy can use Australian-specific databases already developed by CAE Australia.

Cdre Colin Lawrence, director general of navy aviation systems, Australian Defence Materiel Organisation, said: 'The MH-60R Seahawk will play a critical role as the navy's new naval combat helicopter, and our MH-60R training systems will be used extensively to help prepare our aircrews to safely and effectively accomplish a range of missions.

'We are extremely pleased with the level of quality and fidelity CAE has delivered in our broad suite of MH-60R training devices, and look forward to CAE's continued on-site support services on the MH-60R programme.'
