AgustaWestland bets on dual-use helicopters

AgustaWestland hopes its dual-use family of helicopters concept will allow it to successfully capitalise on a growing commercial sector and offset a shrinking military market, according to senior executives. 

An over-reliance on government contracts is leaving helicopter OEMs exposed and vulnerable in the face of a rapidly-changing and competitive commercial sector, according to Roberto Garavaglia, senior vice president of strategy and business development for AgustaWestland.

Speaking to journalists at the company’s Rotorsim training facility in Sesto Calende, Garavaglia emphasised the importance of adopting a flexible and strategic approach to helicopter manufacture in the current climate.
