HMS Queen Elizabeth’s dedicated maritime helicopter squadron, 820 Naval Air Squadron (NAS), is preparing to embark on the carrier for the next stage of the vessel’s sea trials, the Royal Navy announced on 12 July.

The carrier will spend the autumn and winter of 2018 in sea trials, which will include fixed-wing aircraft – the F-35B – embarking on the vessel for the first time.

820 NAS and its Merlin Mk2 helicopters are tasked with protecting HMS Queen Elizabeth from threats on and below the surface. The squadron will also provide search and rescue cover.
