UDT Europe: Patria helps train Finnish Navy

Patria is using low-cost, man-portable UUVs as training tools for ASW operations for the Finnish Navy.

‘It’s very important to have low cost training for the navy; they don’t have much money nowadays,’ Arto Laine, a Patria representative, told the Undersea Defence Technology conference in Alicante, Spain on 30 May. ‘They also don’t have submarines, which makes this training difficult.’

Laine noted that the small unmanned systems have been ‘very useful’, especially with the Finnish Navy, and the training involves the UUVs effectively ‘playing’ at acoustically representing a system, such as a submarines or diver propulsion vehicles.
